Hello… Adios…

Shoe review for the Adidas Adios, by Chris McClung

First a disclaimer: I work at a running shoe store and I know shoes, I but am far from a shoe geek or guru. We have John, Joe, and Erik for that. I write this review because I wear this shoe and just happen to love it.

Quick background: I discovered this shoe in January when Coach Scotty and John insisted that I give it a try. When I first tried it on, I was a little skeptical because it felt like it might be too firm, but I made the purchase after more pressure from the coaches. Now, I know not to doubt them – this shoe while running is like drinking iced tea on a hot summer day… feels so good. Now, I wear it for almost all speed workouts and in races up to the half marathon. [Note: the Brooks Launch is my primary long run shoe.]

The verdict: This shoe is perfect for those who are looking for a lightweight shoe for speed workouts and/or races up to the marathon. It is light but not minimal and oh so smooth and fast!

What I like:

-        So, that’s what responsive means! When I used to hear the word “responsive” when referring to running shoes, I would stare back and nod with that I-am-pretending-to-know-what-you-are-talking-about face. The truth was I had no idea what that meant and was more confused by the word than anything. In my world, the only responsive shoes I knew were the funky ones sitting in my garage whose stench would stand up and smack me in the face every time I walked out there. Anyway… I digress. After my first run in the Adios, I finally got it. The firmness I felt during the initial try-on came back during my run as a springy (but not bouncy) shoe that propelled me from footstrike to footstrike. For the first time in my life, I felt a shoe actually working with me to move down the road. It was “responding” back with each step as if to say: “hey, I am here to help… let’s roll.” Yes, I said back, let’s roll!

-        Smooth as silk. Running in this shoe is like driving on a freshly paved highway. It has a very smooth transition from heel to toe, just like the Brooks Launch. [If you run in the Launch, then you know what I am talking about.] The shoe feels exactly the same on the bottom of your foot from foot plant to toe off with no funny aberrations. And, the transition from heel to toe feels as natural as running barefoot on the beach. The smooth ride combined with the responsive nature of this shoe makes it feel very, very fast – perfect for speed work!

-        Light but not too minimal. This shoe weighs in at 7.4 ounces for men and 6.3 ounces for women, so it is super-light for speedwork. Even at a lower weight, however, the shoe feels more substantial and cushioned under your foot than you might expect. Plus, with a near-standard heel/toe differential, it is easier on the legs than many minimalist or lower-heel trainers/racers but with the same very-fast feel. If you are already in a lighter weight training shoe (like the Launch, Kinvara, Mirage, NB890 for example), then you can easily move to this shoe for speed work with very little transition.

What could be better:

-        The upper could better. The upper is light with very few overlays, but it is made of this cloth-like material that could be better. As a result, it does absorb moisture and pick up dirt more than I would like. This is a small nit, because it does not affect the performance of the shoe. But, hey, no shoe is perfect, right?

-        A wee bit narrow for some. Also, if you have a wide foot, then this shoe will probably be too snug for you. I have a normal to slightly narrow foot, and the fit is perfect. For those blessed with a little wider foot, then perhaps the Asics Tarther or NB1400 would be a better choice for you.

Stats:

Weight: 7.4 ounces (men), 6.3 ounces (women)

Heel/toe differential: 11mm

Price: $110 ($93.50 with Rogue discount)

Water at your fingertips!

It may be September, but it is hot (and humid) as ever out there.

Every single one of us should be drinking as much water as possible, as often as possible – when you’ve had enough, drink more!

We try to make this as easy as possible when you are running with Rogue by providing water coolers and cups every 2-3 miles. But what about the days you are not with Rogue? What if that water fountain you were counting on is turned off, or those coolers on the trail have disappeared due to flooding? What about all of that paper cup waste??

A solution that more and more road runners are finding (trail runners have been in on this for a long time!) is to get a hand held water bottle. This inexpensive piece of equipment can literally be lifesaver, ensuring that you always have access to water – simply fill it before you go (even better, freeze it before you go!) and refill whenever you have the opportunity. The straps are also very handy, as they typically have small pockets perfect for keys, gels or maps.

Hand helds truly are comfortable to carry, requiring very little adjustment on your part, and cuts down on an incredible amount of waste – remember, we put out paper cups (with our water) for over 1000 runners, every 2-3 miles, twice each week…do the math!

If you haven’t already made the switch, talk to those who have. At least take a look at the options available (we’ve got plenty of choices at Rogue!), try on a few different types to see what’s most comfortable and consider giving it a try. There is really nothing better than knowing that you can drink or pour cool water over your head at any time, no matter where your run takes you!

Yes, your shoes DO smell.

Hot weather means sweat, and sweat means wet and smelly shoes. Really, really wet and smelly. That are often left in the oven that is your car.

We all know (or should know) that throwing your running shoes into the washing machine is a bad idea, and while the newspaper trick does soak up moisture, it doesn’t do much for smell. It also wastes a lot of newspaper when you consider a whole summer’s worth!

STUFFITTS were created with these things in mind and Rogue Equipment now has them, when you need them most!

Check out what Nedra has to say about her Stuffitts:

I love my new stuffitts! I’m a heavy sweater which leads to wet stinky shoes especially in the summer. Since I’ve started using Stuffitts, my shoes dry out faster and smell a lot better. I also love the fact that Stuffitts are a more sustainable solution than stuffing your shoes with newspaper since. I can reuse them day after day after day and when needed, slip the covers off and wash them out and it’s like a new pair!

Stop by Rogue Equipment and check them out – we all know we need them.

Next Thursday is Super Thursday!

Rogue’s last Thursday happy hour always features free beer, but this month we have even more to offer!

April’s event will be hosted by the Super Sidekicks, in support of CASA of Travis County, the Superhero Foundation and the greater cause of child abuse awareness and prevention.

Not only can you learn more about why CASA is so important and how to get involved with the Super Sidekicks through your own running, but you will have a chance to support the organization simply by shopping: Rogue will donate 3% of all Thursday proceeds to CASA of Travis County!

We will have free beer, free food (compliments of Tasty Healthy Meals) and, most importantly, a contest! As the theme is Superheroes, we want to see some walk through the door. Don your best superhero costume (as always, open to interpretation) and the winner will receive a $35 gift card to Rogue Equipment.

Soft like clouds.

Just arrived!

The new Asics Nimbus 12 and Cumulus 12 can now be found at Rogue Equipment. I could give you a bunch of technical specs and throw in some fancy jargon, but I think John Schrup, manager of Rogue Equipment, says it best:

“The Nimbus 12 and Cumulus 12 feel like butter/cotton candy/bubble gum that’s been in your pocket for hours. Smooth and soft, like clouds.”

Come check them out and see for yourself!
