We all put a lot of time and energy into our training, and know firsthand the power of running and how it shapes each and every day for so many people. It builds community, makes us happier, healthier, supremely confident and ready to take on nearly anything that life throws at us. Shouldn’t we share that power with others, especially those who might otherwise never discover it?
Girls on the Run of Austin, an affiliate of Girls on the Run International, is an organization that is doing just that. The Austin chapter was founded in 2008 and is an after-school program that uses the power of running to help prepare pre-teen girls for a lifetime of self-respect, positive choices and healthy living. Over 12 weeks, girls are guided by trained volunteer coaches, and learn about the power of positive self-image. At the end of the semester, in celebration of their achievement, girls along with their families, coaches and volunteers participate in a local 5K race.

Austin likes to keep it casual and we plan on living up to it! Throw on your jeans and join us for the Girls on the Run of Austin “Runnin’ Down a Dream” charity event held Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009 from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. Hosted at the Gibson Guitar Showroom, this event will have an open bar, food provided by Elsi’s Restaurant and Hill Country Cupcake, silent auction and live music from a well-known Austin-based band, so don’t forget your boots. All proceeds benefit Girls on the Run of Austin.
