Massage Yourself

Now that we are deep into marathon and half marathon training in Austin, Texas I am sure you are feeling the aches and pains of all those miles.  For most of the runners we see it starts with the calves and shins and then migrates to the IT Band and hamstrings and if it doesn’t settle there it might attach the lower back or the hips.

Fundamentally we would all be better off if we had our own massage therapist that we could go to at least one time a week.  With our hectic schedules and the price tag associated with a visit to a sports massage expert it’s not always possible to utilize what we all know we need.

Lucky, there are many tools on the market right now and Rogue coaches are certified as instructors in one of the most important self massage tools you can use, Trigger Point.  Trigger Point, a self massage kit developed by Austin’s own Cassidy Phillips, is an excellent set of tools a runner or triathlete or just about anyone can use to stay healthy.  Trigger Point will not replace your massage therapist but it will keep you healthy so you don’t have to go as often.  This not only keeps you healthy but it can also save you some money at the same time.

At Rogue Running we utilize the full kits both before and after all runs.  If you were to walk in off the street on any given day you will see a sea of runners rolling out both before and after their runs.  We have 15+ sets available for runners to use.  The benefits of the trigger point technology is it is easy to learn how to use, the pressure and therefore benefit you get from using it for just 5 to 15 minutes  before you and after you run are amazing.

We coach runners who have for years had chronic IT Band syndrome, plantar fascitis, and Achilles tendonitis.  All of them knew nothing about trigger point and after just a couple weeks of using the products before and after the runs they are the majority of them are pain-free and able to run faster and farther than ever before.

The New York Times fitness section of the paper just recently ran an article called, Becoming Your Own Massage Therapist.  This article review different types of self massage tools, like Trigger Point, that runners, triathletes and athletes can use to stay healthy and not spend lots of money.
